New Students

A new student includes first-time degree-seeking students, students transferring from another institution, and students who were concurrently enrolled in high school and college.

Step 1: Know Your Program

  • Uncertain which program of study is right for you? Try the career assessments in Focus 2 to help decide on your WCC program and launch your career!
  • Review Wilkes Community College’s more than 35 programs of study, including degree, diploma, and certificate options.

Step 2: Complete NC Residency Determination

Complete your NC Residency Determination. This MUST be done before you can submit your admission application. Please have the following items available before completing Residency Determination:

  • NC Driver License/NC ID
  • Your tax information and/or your parents tax information, if you are under 25 years old
  • Vehicle License & Registration Information
  • Military Documentation (Benefits info or DD214) (if applicable)
  • Foreign/Immigrant Documents (if applicable)

Step 3: Apply to WCC

Complete your online application. Visit the Registration page to see application deadlines for upcoming semesters/terms.

Step 4: Submit Official Transcripts

Transcripts must be sent to WCC directly from the high school and/or previous college(s) you have attended.

If you had an IEP or 504 in high school, that information is not submitted with your transcripts. If you would like to request course accommodations, please review the accommodation process on the Office of Disability, Inclusion, and Diversity (ODID) webpage or call 336-838-6560.

Step 5: Take the Placement Test (if applicable)

By assessing your skills, WCC can determine which English, mathematics, and reading courses are most appropriate for you. A student may be eligible to exempt from placement testing by satisfying certain criteria. To find more information regarding placement testing, study guides, special accommodations, and testing hours, visit the Placement Testing page. Visit the Registration page to see placement testing deadlines for upcoming semesters/terms.

Step 6: Apply for Financial Aid

Students interested in applying and learning more about financial aid should visit the Financial Aid page.

Step 7: Attend New Student Advising and Registration Appointment

Entering students, including first time degree-seeking students, students transferring from another institution, and previous concurrently enrolled students, will be scheduled for a new student advising and registration appointment after completing all enrollment steps. Please call Student Services at 336-838-6137 to schedule a new student advising and registration appointment. Visit the Registration page to see advising/registration deadlines for upcoming semesters/terms.

Step 8: Attend New Student Orientation

Entering students, including first-time degree-seeking students, students transferring from another institution, and previous concurrently enrolled students, will be scheduled for a New Student Orientation appointment after the completion of their new student advising and registration appointment.

Note: Transcripts and test scores received by the admissions office will be deleted two years after their receipt date if the applicant has not enrolled.

    Special Credit / Visiting Students

    A special credit student intends to only take a few classes at WCC and does not plan to pursue a degree, diploma, or certificate with the college. Students typically choose this option if they are planning to take a small number of classes to either transfer to another college at which they have already been enrolled for professional development or to fulfill a special interest.

    Note: Special credit students are not eligible for financial aid.

    High School Students

    Through Career & College Promise (CCP), qualified high-school-age students in North Carolina have the opportunity to take college courses, tuition-free, while they are in high school, allowing them to get a jump-start on their workplace and college preparation.

    College & Career Readiness

    The College & Career Readiness Division provides a range of instructional opportunities for adults who have not completed a high school credential or who are functioning below high school level to become literate; obtain knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency; complete secondary education; for parents, to obtain the academic skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children; and, for persons whose native language is not English, to acquire English language proficiency.

    Continuing Education Courses

    Ongoing changes in technology, and career and job requirements, create the need for life-long learning for individuals in both occupational and vocational areas. The Workforce Development and Community Education Division is responsible for responding to these needs by providing services to individuals, organizations, businesses, and industries within Alleghany, Ashe, and Wilkes counties. Tailored to the needs of our service area, the courses range from basic skills to advanced courses in various technical fields. In addition, a range of vocational courses are offered that are designed to meet the needs and interests of the citizens of the region.
