Competency‑Based Education (CBE) at Wilkes Community College is a flexible learning option that allows students to progress by demonstrating what they know and can do, rather than by spending a set amount of time in class.

In CBE programs, courses are built around clearly defined competencies—specific skills and knowledge students must master to move forward. This approach can be especially beneficial for adult learners or students with prior experience, as it allows them to advance more quickly through material they already understand while spending additional time on areas that require more focus. CBE emphasizes applied learning, real‑world relevance, and clear expectations, helping students stay focused on completing their credential efficiently and confidently.

Information Technology Cyber Security Technician Certificate

The Cyber Security Technician certificate prepares completers for entry‑level roles supporting the security of information systems, networks, and operating environments. Students develop foundational skills in networking, Linux and Windows operating systems, web and database concepts, and core cybersecurity principles. Graduates are prepared to assist with system security, identify basic vulnerabilities, and support organizational efforts to protect data and technology resources.

Welding Technology – Basic Welder/Fabricator Certificate

The Basic Welder/Fabricator certificate prepares completers to perform entry‑level welding and fabrication tasks using industry‑standard processes, including MIG, TIG, and cutting techniques. Students gain hands‑on experience interpreting welding symbols and specifications while fabricating components from plate materials. Graduates are prepared for employment in manufacturing, construction, or fabrication settings where safe, accurate welding and basic fabrication skills are required.

These certificates are Pell-eligible, so Financial Aid may be available. Contact our Financial Aid office today.

How does competency-based education enrollment affect VA benefit certification?

Due to the self‑paced nature of this program, students’ VA enrollment certifications will be amended as courses are completed. As enrollment levels change, VA education benefits will be adjusted accordingly to reflect the student’s current enrollment status. If a student completes all required courses prior to the official end of the term, the Department of Veterans Affairs will be notified that the student’s enrollment and associated benefits have concluded. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss this structure with their Success Coach and the Financial Aid Office to determine whether this program is the best fit for their individual goals and benefit usage.
