ASC Information

Q: Do I have to fill out an application to receive tutoring help?
A: ASC tutoring services are provided free to all WCC students and do not require an application.

Q: Must I have an appointment to meet with an ASC tutor?
A: In most cases tutors are available on a drop-in basis during open hours. An appointment might be helpful during busy times, but appointments are not required for most subjects. Currently, tutoring for nursing at the Ashe ASC is by appointment only, and all tutoring (for the health sciences/nursing and all other subjects) at the Herring Hall ASC is scheduled by appointment only.

Q: How often can I meet with an ASC writing tutor for each paper?
A: There is no limit! Students who work with a writing tutor multiple times during the process of writing a paper
are more successful. ASC writing tutors will assist in any step of the writing process from brainstorming and outlining to a final edit.

Q: Why should I come to the ASC for tutoring?
A: Tutors are trained to provide quality, student-centered assistance. Writing and Math ASC tutors hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related subject area. Computer and health science tutors hold degrees in their areas. ASC tutors have all been in your shoes. Their sole focus is to guide and support you.

Q: In what courses can I receive assistance?
A: ASC tutors can assist you with most of your college courses. The Writing Center can assist with any class in which you are writing papers. Along with English papers, writing tutors have assisted with papers in History, Psychology, Sociology, Education, and other subjects. Math tutors will assist students with any math course or math questions in any class. Tutors are also available to help with nursing, biology, chemistry, and other sciences. Study skills tutoring is available in any area.

Q: Who can receive tutoring?
A: ASC Tutoring is available to all WCC curriculum students regardless of course levels. Students at any level can benefit from tutoring assistance. Tutoring may help a student who is failing pass a class, or it may help a student boost a grade from a C to an A. Tutoring may help a student improve scores on the placement test. Receiving tutoring means that you are utilizing all your resources so that you will be successful in college!

  • When you arrive, you will scan in with your student ID and indicate the area in which you need tutoring.
  • The tutor will ask you questions about the area in which you need assistance. If possible, bring your textbook or assignment sheet. That will help the tutor know where you are in class and your instructor’s expectations.
  • Tutoring can last for just a few minutes up to an hour. We recommend frequent sessions. Tutoring is usually most effective if you and the tutor work on one concept per session, and then you return for a further session to work on another concept.
  • Tutors will not help you complete homework, quizzes, or tests. During tutoring sessions, your tutor will work with you to increase your skills and knowledge in your subject area or class. Although your tutor will be happy to help you with problems/scenarios similar to homework questions, the goal of tutoring is not a homework help session.
  • The tutor will encourage you to write your own notes about the session. Instead of the tutor marking corrections on your paper, your tutor will expect you to “hold the pen”. It is the tutor’s goal to have you remember concepts that were discussed during the session after you leave.
