Nurse Aide (CNA)

This course is designed to prepare graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis on aging process including mental, social and physical needs of the elderly, patient’s rights, nutrition management, elimination procedures, safe environment, restorative services, personal and special care procedures and activities, human body structure and function and related common disease/disorders, communication and documentation, death and dying, and roles of the nursing assistant and health team members. A skill/competency evaluation is required. The course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and skill/competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide I by the N.C. Division of Facility Services.

CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED AND WILL BE FILLED ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS.

  • Course Length: 192 hours (50 classroom hours, 70 lab hours. 54 clinical hours, 18 practice/ mock testing hours)
  • Program Locations: Wilkes-Herring Hall, Ashe Campus, Alleghany Center
  • Program Format: seated
  • Prerequisite: High School Diploma or equivalent; high school students may register with a current high school transcript if at least 16 ½ years old
  • Registration Requirements: Driver’s License (or government issued photo bearing identification), Social Security card, at least 16 ½ years old
  • Co-requisite: Healthcare Career Readiness Course
  • Registration Fees: $195.55 ($180.00 registration, $0.55 student insurance, $15.00 mandatory malpractice insurance)
  • Form of Payment: cash (correct change), check (made payable to WCC), VISA or MasterCard accepted
  • Financial Assistance:
    • Contact NC Works at 336-838-5164
    • Scholarships, based on availability
  • Certified Criminal Background Check/Drug Screen: will be due the first day of class ($90.00)
    • Your instructor will inform you about where and when to obtain report during orientation.  The report is reviewed by the clinical site and listed convictions/charges may prevent you from being able to go to clinical. If a clinical site rejects your report, you will automatically be dropped from the class with no refund of any registration fees.
  • Attendance: If more than 6 hours are missed, the student will be dropped from the course. All activities/materials in class must be made up by the student.
  • Additional expenses:
    • For clinical, ONE “scrub uniform” (Caribbean Blue – top and bottom), white or black socks, black/white nursing shoes/leather tennis shoes (no clogs), watch with a second hand, notebook, black pens, pencils as needed.
    • Textbook: $28.70+tax
    • Immunizations: prices vary
    • State Test: The fee for the test is $140. Testing is conducted through Credentia. Instructors will let students know when they need to bring the fee for the test. Fees must be paid via card (credit or debit card) or a testing voucher by a third-party sponsor.

This course is designed to provide a review of the Nurse Aide I core content to prepare individuals who have been or are currently listed on a Nurse Aide I Registry, have successfully completed a state-approved training program, hold a state recognized health care credential from any state as or military personnel who have had medical/corpsman training to sit for the Nurse Aide I State Exam. The course is a minimum of forty (40) hours and must include the following Nurse Aide I curriculum content: Basic Nursing Skills, Personal Care Skills, Recognition of Mental Health and Social Service Needs, Care of Cognitively Impaired Residents, Basic Restorative Services and Resident Rights. Lab activities are required but clinical rotations are optional. Nurse Aide I Refresher programs must be approved by the Division of Health Service Regulations (DHSR).

This course is designed to prepare graduates to perform more complex skills for patients or residents regardless of the setting. A skill/competency evaluation is required for documenting student competency. The course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and skill/competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing Nurse Aide Registry. In all employment settings, the listed Nursing Assistant II will work under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel.

  • Course Length: 180 hours (100 class/lab, 80 clinical)

  • PREREQUISITE: High School Diploma or Equivalent, Completion of a Nurse Aide I Training Program and Current listing on the NC Nurse Aide I Registry.
  • Registration Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent, driver’s license (or government issued photo bearing identification, social security card, Verification of Previous NA Training, Verification of Current listing on NA I Registry, Employment Verification Letter as NA I or recent completion of NA I class, Current CPR Certification, Name on NA I Registry must be current

This course is intended to meet the NC Board of Nursing requirements for competency assessment for NA II renewal based on the conditions of 21 NCAC 36.0404(b). The course must cover all NA II skills identified on the NA II Task List. All skills must be assessed and successfully completed to demonstrate competency. This assessment may take place in the skills lab, in simulation, in a patient care setting, or a combination. A program must be approved by the NC Board of Nursing to offer NA II Competency Assessment.
