Cardiovascular Technician

This course is designed and approved to prepare the student to become a certified EKG (ECG) and Technician/Monitor. The course will cover the anatomy and physiology of the heart, principles of EKG, dysrhythmia recognition of sinus, junctional/atrial rhythms, heart blocks and bundle branches and ventricular ectopy rhythms. Skills will include operating EKG equipment, running and mounting strips as well as reading and interpreting 22 types of cardiac lead tracings produced from 12 and five lead monitors and to understand the basics of capnography as it relates to heart function. Course includes a clinical component.

  • Course Length: 134 hours (102 class/lab, 32 clinical)
  • Program Locations: Wilkes-Herring Hall, Ashe Campus
  • Program Format: seated
  • Prerequisite: High School Diploma or equivalent; high school students may register with a current high school transcript if at least 16 ½ years old
  • Registration Requirements: Driver’s license (or government issued photo bearing identification), Social Security card, 16 ½ years old
  • Co-requisite: Healthcare Career Readiness Course
  • Registration Fees: $195.55 ($180.00 registration, $0.55 student insurance, $15.00 mandatory malpractice insurance)
  • Form of Payment: cash (correct change), check (made payable to WCC), VISA or MasterCard accepted

  • Certified Criminal Background Check/Drug Screen: will be due the first day of class ($90.00)
    • Your instructor will inform you about where and when to obtain report during orientation.  The report is reviewed by the clinical site and listed convictions/charges may prevent you from being able to go to clinical. If a clinical site rejects your report, you will automatically be dropped from the class with no refund of any registration fees.
  • Attendance: If more than 6 hours are missed, the student will be dropped from the course. All activities/materials in class must be made up by the student.
  • Additional expenses:
    • For clinical, ONE “scrub uniform” (Caribbean Blue – top and bottom), white or black socks, black/white nursing shoes/leather tennis shoes (no clogs), watch with a second hand, notebook, black pens, pencils as needed.
    • Textbook/Workbook: $40.00+tax
    • Immunizations: prices vary
    • Certification Exams: NHA Exam ($129)

Students must attend a mandatory orientation prior to the first day of class.
