Local Anesthesia for Dental Hygienists

This course covers pain management techniques used in dentistry, focusing on administering local anesthesia. Licensed dental hygienists will be instructed to provide safe and effective local anesthesia administration for dental hygiene practice. Topics covering pharmacology, physiology, equipment, block and infiltration techniques, legal issues, and medical emergencies, including systemic complications, will be covered in this course. Students will be administering local anesthesia to fellow participants in the clinical sessions.

  • Course Length: 24 hours
  • Program Location: Wilkes-Herring Hall
  • Program Format: hybrid
  • Prerequisites:
    • High School Diploma
    • Current, valid NC Dental Hygienist License
    • Current, valid CPR certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
    • The participant must be a dental hygienist licensed in North Carolina and have been practicing dental hygiene under the supervision of a licensed dentist for a minimum of two years immediately preceding this course. Newly graduated dental hygienists are not allowed to take this course and will be required to take a course that reflects 14 hours of clinical instruction (30-hour course).
  • Registration Requirements: Driver’s license (or government issued photo bearing identification), Social Security card
  • Tuition & Fees: $950.00 (must be paid at registration)
