2019 WCC Annual Youth Poultry Workshop Class

The Wilkes Community College Animal Science Club hosted the Annual Wilkes Youth Poultry Workshop on July 25, 2019.  Fifteen students from Wilkes, Ashe, Alexander, Iredell, and Stokes counties participated in the event. Participants gained a general understanding of the poultry industry, candled and graded eggs to determine quality based on the United States Department of Agriculture Quality Standard.

Students also learned to grade whole poultry carcasses according to USDA standards, toured the campus broiler farm and dissected birds to identify and learn about different internal organs and their functions. Registration for this event was free and all students received a t-shirt, lanyard, and lunch. This event was sponsored by the US Poultry and Egg Association.

“The Wilkes Youth Poultry Workshop provides participants the chance to get a detailed, hands-on experience in the poultry world, we are excited to see the next generation of poultry industry leaders,” stated Matthew P. Greene, WCC lead Animal Science instructor.
