The Wilkes Community College Board of Trustees met on Friday, December 13 at the John A. Walker Center, located on the Wilkes Campus. The business session began at 12:30 with approval of the minutes from the October 10 and October 26 Board of Trustees meetings.

Oath of Office

Cynthia Alford, executive assistant to the president and board liaison, administered the oath of office to the newly appointed trustee, Kim Walker. Ms. Walker will fulfill the unexpired term of late trustee Tracy Walker. Ms. Walker resides in North Wilkesboro, NC. with her husband Kirk. She has two children, a son Brandon Walker and wife Ashley. And a daughter, Whitney Walker Nolan, and husband Chris. She has three grandchildren; Maddux Walker, Braley Walker, and Caroline Nolan. Ms. Walker is a 1976 graduate of North Wilkes High School; a 1978 graduate of Wilkes Community College, and a 1980 graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting. She is the sole proprietor of Kimberly S. Walker, CPA, in North Wilkesboro. Prior to operating her own CPA firm, Ms. Walker served as a staff accountant and later as a partner with Scott, Dobbins, and Company CPA.

Trustee Recognition

Dr. Cox presented a plaque and resolution to Nena Walker, Tracy Walker’s widow, in honor of Tracy’s service to the board. Mr. Walker served on the WCC Board of Trustees from July 1, 2016, until his passing on October 14, 2019.

Trustee Walker served with great dedication and pride in the college. Dr. Cox, the Board of Trustees, and college personnel expressed their respect and appreciation for Tracy’s service, as well as deepest sympathies to Ms. Walker and the family.

Building and Grounds Committee

The Board of Trustees approved an amendment to a long- term lease agreement for the building site that will be used to construct a welding lab at the Alleghany Center. The amendment was required to meet with State Treasurer guidelines. The building site will be leased from Alleghany County.

The WCC Board of Trustees will meet again on January 9, 2020, at the John A. Walker Center Ballroom.
