The Wilkes Community College Animal Science Club hosted the Annual Wilkes Youth Poultry Workshop on July 1, 2021. “The 2021 Youth Poultry Workshop welcomed students from seven counties. Students participating in the workshop gained a deeper understanding of the poultry industry,” stated Stacie Taylor, WCC chair of Applied Engineering Technology. Taylor added, “A huge thank you goes out to WCC’s Poultry Management students for hosting this event!”
Fourteen students from Alleghany, Ashe, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties participated in the event. Topics covered included candling eggs to determine fertility, break out eggs to determine hatchability, and grading eggs to determine quality based on the United States Department of Agriculture Quality Standard.
Students also explored chicken embryo development and witnessed chicks hatching, toured the campus broiler farm and dissected birds to identify and learn about different internal organs and their functions. Registration for this event was free and all students received a t-shirt, hat, lanyard, and lunch. This event was made possible through a US Poultry Foundation grant.
