The Alleghany Center’s Rotaract Club partnered with Sparta and Glade Creek Elementary schools on a food drive challenge. A total of 3,185 cans and boxes of food were collected and donated to Alleghany County families. WCC’s Alleghany Center prepared 20 boxes of food for Hospice, the Farm Worker program, and the Child Development Center clients.
The Food Closet had sent out an immediate need alarm to local officials and churches. WCC’s Rotaract Club answered the call by taking the remaining 2 truckloads of food to Alleghany’s Solid Rock Food Closet. The Food Closet was so appreciative, shown through the hugs and tears from local staff.
Rotaract members Kaleb Redd, Clay Long, Sharon Wolfe, Jennifer McCallister, Benita Hampton, club advisor, and Jimmy Rutherford, WCC Alleghany Adjunct Faculty worked approximately 12 hours over a two-day period loading, separating, preparing. and unloading the 3,185 cans and boxes of food.
“This was an amazing effort by the elementary schools and WCCs Alleghany Center,” stated Susan Nilo, WCC Alleghany Center director. “The students and elementary schools put a lot of work and time in collecting over 3,000 cans and boxes of food for local residents. We are very proud of their efforts,” she added. The Rotaract Club will reward the top three classes that collected the most food at each school with a Pizza Party.
