The Wilkes Community College Small Business Center has a variety of seminars scheduled for August that support the development of new businesses and the growth of existing businesses. These seminars are offered at no charge to participants unless otherwise noted; however, attendees must pre-register to participate.

How to Sell on Facebook Marketplace – August 5, 2020, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. – Online

If you want to be successful, you cannot sit back and wait for customers to come to you. You have to reach out to them. So, where are they? Facebook. Facebook is the largest social network in the world, with more than 1.1 billion people logging in daily to spend an average of 58.5 minutes on the platform. That’s insane. If you sell products online and you don’t have a Facebook shop, you’re missing a huge opportunity. This seminar will show how easy it is to “Sell to the World” for free.

Getting Started in a Food Business Part 1 & Part 2 – August 11 & 12, 2020, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. – Online

Do you have an old family recipe that you would like to develop into a business? Love baking, and think you can generate some income from your goodies? Getting Started in a Food Business is an introduction to taking your recipe from the kitchen to the marketplace. In this two-part workshop, you will learn:

  • Guidelines for packaging and labeling
  • Ideas for finding the right kind of market for your product

QuickBooks: Learning the Online Version Part 1 & Part 2 – August 18 & 29, 2020, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. – Online

Do you need to get your business up to date with the latest tools for keeping excellent financial records? If so, QuickBooks Online may be your answer. Topics covered in the seminar are general entry, chart of accounts, bank feeds, sales tax, reports & queries, receiving customer payments and deposits, tracking inventory and payroll, and projects more.

Board Roles and Responsibilities – August 19, 2020, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. – Online

Do individuals on your board of directors understand where their job ends and where staff jobs begin? This workshop will guide participants through conversations and exercises that clarify the roles and responsibilities of board members vs. those of staff. Because boards exist to govern an organization, this workshop will highlight key strategies for drafting/revising your organization’s mission and vision statement and outline the policies and procedures all boards should consider to reduce liability and increase productivity.

When you take a look at your board of directors what do you see? Worker bees exhausted from the daily grind of keeping the organization running. Are there simply warm bodies in seats? Are there seats left empty by big-name people who never seem to find the time for meetings? This workshop evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of your board. Participants will gain a clear understanding of who “could” and “should” be on their board of directors as well as processes and procedures to ensure that board members are screened, equipped, and empowered to generate impact for your organization.

Effective Fundraising with Your Board Part 1 & Part 2 – August 20, 2020, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. & 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Online

As nonprofit development staff are faced with the challenge of engaging board members to assist with development efforts, they are often met with resistance and frustration. As with all fundraising, engaging in conversations and learning about those you work with is key. Learn some of the pitfalls to avoid in beginning to ask for your board’s help in development as well as the steps you can take to have more participation from your board members in all aspects of development work. Join us to discuss board relations, board education, and how to begin to build the foundations for a working board that will help your nonprofit grow for good.

Introduction to Strategic Planning – August 20, 2020, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Online

To be successful a nonprofit should always have a detailed strategic plan. Participants will learn key components in the strategic planning process and how to engage the right board members, staff, volunteers, and/or stakeholders in the process. This workshop offers a roadmap for non-profits who want an overview of strategic planning from start to finish as well as some practical tools to use along the way.
