Services

Writing tutors will assist students at any stage in the writing process – from brainstorming and organizing to revising for final submission. Students who make multiple visits to the writing center for each paper are more successful. Tutors encourage students to visit early, as soon as they receive an assignment, and to visit often for assistance. Students who make multiple visits to the writing center for each paper are more successful. Writing assistance is offered for English classes but is also available for all subject areas in which students write papers.

Students can make an appointment or check for drop-in tutoring availability. Tutoring is offered both online and in-person. Students may also submit a paper online for a writing tutor to review.

Students can make an appointment or check for drop-in tutoring availability. Tutoring is offered both online and in-person.

During tutoring sessions, your tutor will work with you to increase your skills and knowledge in your subject. Tutors will not help you complete homework, quizzes, or tests. Although your tutor will be happy to help you with problems/scenarios similar to homework questions, the goal of tutoring is not a homework help session.

Even attending one tutoring session can be beneficial, but we recommend multiple sessions with your tutor to achieve the most positive results. Tutors cannot and will not guarantee you a specific grade on an assignment or in a course, but studies have shown that students who attend tutoring do better in classes and complete courses at a higher percentage.

In addition to providing tutoring, the Academic Support Center serves as an open computer lab, where students have access to computers. Students may use the Academic Support Center at any WCC campus to work independently. If assistance is needed while the student is in the ASC, a staff member can help. Technology assistants are available to help students with password resets, signing into email, submitting assignments in Moodle, using Microsoft Office, and other technology-related questions.

Special software is available in the computer labs for practice. Mac computers, loaded with software for students in graphics design courses, are available at the Wilkes and Ashe ASC locations.

Students experiencing a technology issue may call 336-838-6566 or submit a Prowler Help Desk ticket.

Professional tutors are available for most health science programs including nursing, radiography, respiratory therapy, and more.

FAQ

ASC tutoring services are provided free to all WCC students and do not require an application.

Appointments are strongly encouraged and are helpful to ensure a tutor is available at a time that works for the student. Students may also drop in during open hours to see if a tutor is currently available.

Currently, tutoring in health sciences is available by appointment only. Tutoring for health sciences is offered at Herring Hall, the Ashe Campus, and online.

There is no limit! Students who work with a writing tutor multiple times during the process of writing a paper are more successful. ASC writing tutors will assist in any step of the writing process from brainstorming and outlining to revising for final submission.

Tutors are trained to provide quality, student-centered assistance. Writing and Math ASC tutors hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related subject area. Computer and health science tutors hold degrees in their areas. ASC tutors have all been in your shoes. Their goal is to guide and support you.

ASC tutors can assist with most college courses. The Writing Center can assist with any course that requires writing. Along with essays for English courses, writing tutors have assisted with papers in history, psychology, sociology, education, and other subjects. Math tutors can assist students with any math course or math concepts in courses such as business math, physics, chemistry, culinary math, automotive math, and nursing. Business tutors are available for business and accounting courses. Science tutors assist with biology, chemistry, physics and other sciences. Health sciences tutors support students in nursing, radiography, respiratory therapy, and other health-related programs. Study skills tutoring and technology support is available for any subject area. Additional specific subject area tutoring may be available; contact the ASC Welcome Desk at 838-336-6566 or check the Tutoring Icon for options.

Tutoring is for everyone! Whether a student is struggling through a course or making straight As, tutoring can help to ensure students understand course content, improve writing skills, enhance math or science understanding, learn better time management or study skills, and more!

ASC tutoring is available to all WCC curriculum students regardless of course levels. Studies have shown that students who take advantage of tutoring services pass their courses at a much higher rate than those who do not. Receiving tutoring means that you are utilizing all your resources so that you will be successful in college!

  • The tutor will ask you questions about the area in which you need assistance. If possible, bring your textbook and be ready to provide any information about the assignment from your instructor or Moodle course. This will help your tutor ensure that you are meeting your instructor’s expectations.
  • Tutoring can last for just a few minutes up to an hour. We recommend frequent sessions.
  • Tutors will not help you complete homework, quizzes, or tests. During tutoring sessions, your tutor will work with you to increase your skills and knowledge in your subject area or class. Although your tutor will be happy to help you with problems/scenarios similar to homework questions, the goal of tutoring is not a homework help session.
  • The tutor will encourage you to write your own notes about the session. Instead of the tutor marking corrections on your paper, your tutor will expect you to “hold the pen”. It is the tutor’s goal to have you remember concepts that were discussed during the session after you leave.
