Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
This training program provides students with training at various levels of EMT certification. Emergency Medical Technician training is offered to full-time professionals and volunteers.

The various levels of certification offered at Wilkes Community College are the following:

  • Medical Responder
  • EMT Basic
  • EMT Intermediate
  • EMT Paramedic

Prerequisites to enter these courses include:

  • minimum of a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency
  • successful completion of an entrance examination – assessing basic reading comprehension at a minimum 10th grade level

Those persons successfully completing each course will be eligible for state certification through the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Wilkes Community College offers various training courses in CPR and First Aid that provide certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. These courses provide individuals with the following:

  • instruction and skill development in adult CPR and First Aid
  • instruction and skill development in child CPR and First Aid
  • infant foreign body air obstruction
  • adult, child, and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Also, training in automated external defibrillation is available.

The training requirements and demands for rescue personnel are different than those for firefighters. Wilkes Community College offers courses to train rescue squad personnel. Included in this training are the classes required by the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission to certify individuals as Rescue Technicians (RT).
In addition to the RT program, the college offers other courses in specialized areas of training. These areas include:

  • confined space rescue
  • trench rescue
  • high and low angle rescue
  • mountain rescue
  • automobile extrication
  • bus and heavy truck extrication
  • agricultural accidents
  • water rescue, and more
Search and rescue training involves locating lost persons and removing them from danger.
