The need for paramedics in North Carolina and the nation is great, and the demand continues to grow. The goal of the Emergency Medical Science (EMS) program is to prepare graduates to enter the workforce as paramedics. Students will earn an Associate Degree in Applied Science. The course of study provides opportunities for students to acquire basic and advanced life support knowledge and skills through classroom instruction, practical laboratory sessions, hospital clinical experience, and field internship experiences with emergency medical service agencies.
The EMS program can be completed in four semesters and one summer session. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 20 first-year students annually, beginning with the fall semester.
Students completing the program will be eligible to take the N.C. EMT-Paramedic certification exam. Also, students progressing through the program may have the option at specific points of the program to sit for the EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate certification exams.
Employment opportunities include ambulance services, fire and rescue agencies, air medical services, medical clinics, laboratories, specialty areas of hospitals, industry, educational institutions, and government.
