What is distance learning?
Distance learning is when the instructor and the students are in physically separate locations. Distance learning can be either synchronous or asynchronous, and can take multiple forms such as correspondence, telecommunications, internet and web-based media, or combinations of media, and may include short periods of on-campus attendance.
Why enroll in a distance learning course?
The typical restrictions on time and space associated with traditional online courses are largely eliminated. Instruction can be delivered from the instructor’s desktop to yours so your classroom is anywhere you have access to a computer with an Internet connection and the appropriate software. This means you can learn when it is most convenient for you while in the comfort of your home, office, or even listen to lectures while driving in your car. Some courses may require on-site testing or proctored testing so please check with the instructor to arrange testing if you are unable to physically travel to one of the campuses located in Wilkes, Ashe or Alleghany counties.
What are the differences between Internet, Hybrid and Cyber courses?
Here at WCC, a student has the option of choosing an Internet course, a Hybrid or a Cyber course in addition to the traditional face to face courses. In an Internet course, the entire course is held via the Internet - although some courses may require on-site or proctored testing. Hybrid courses combine the traditional face to face course with an Internet course so that the student receives both in one course. This allows students who may not be totally comfortable with an Internet course to get a taste of how this type of course works while allowing that student the benefit of being able to physically meet in a classroom for part of the course time. Cyber courses are courses where the instructor broadcasts the course content from one location to several off-site locations. Depending on where the student is located, the student could be in the same room as the instructor or view the instructor via large TV screens in either Ashe, Alleghany or from one of the four High School sites in Wilkes County.
