The Arts and Sciences department offers a number of programs designed to be completed over a two year period. Students completing one of these academic programs are awarded an Associate degree. Each program is a university parallel-college transfer program and provides the first two years of academic work on a four-year baccalaureate degree track. Please visit the department for details!

Business & Public Service Technologies

The Business and Public Services Technologies Division provides opportunities to earn a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS) in specific programs of study.Courses are taught by qualified faculty who hold advanced academic degrees in their respective fields. Many of our teaching faculty have worked in business and industry and bring that experience to the classroom.

The BPST faculty shares a commitment to academic excellence and student success. BPST also offers one-year diplomas and 12 to 18 credit hour certificates. All of the courses in the Business Administration degree (A25120) are offered on the Internet.

Health Sciences

The Wilkes Community College Health Sciences Division offers programs of study for interested WCC students in the following areas:

Nursing..

The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care to clients and groups of clients throughout the lifespan in a variety of settings.

Courses will include content related to the nurse’s role as provider of nursing care, as manager of care, as member of the discipline of nursing, and as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) which is required for practice as a registered nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics, physician’s offices, industry, and community agencies.

Dental Assisting..

The Dental Assisting Program prepares individuals to assist the dentist in the delivery of dental treatment and to function as integral members of the dental team while performing chairside and related office and laboratory procedures.

A Diploma is awarded to graduates completing 47 semester hours. Graduates of the program may be eligible to take the Dental Assisting National Board Examination to become certified dental assistants. Employment opportunities include dental offices, dental clinics, public health agencies, and dental schools.

Human Services Technology..

The Human Services Technology curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and also agencies which provide social, community, and educational services. Along with core courses, students take courses which prepare them for specialization in specific human service areas.

Students will take many courses from a variety of disciplines. Emphasis in core courses is placed on development of relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the human services field. Fieldwork experience will provide opportunities for application of knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Graduates should qualify for positions in mental health, child care, family services, social services, rehabilitation, correction, and educational agencies. Graduates choosing to continue their education may select from a variety of transfer programs at senior public and private institutions.

Medical Assisting..

The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures.

Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, medical transcription, computer system operations; assisting with examinations, routine lab procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration and legal issues relative to patient care.

Graduates of CAAHEP accredited Medical Assisting programs may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Certification Examination which allows one to become a Certified Medical Assistant.

Employment opportunities include many different types of physicians’ offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments, and hospitals.

Several diploma and certificate options are being offered in the Human Services and Medical Assisting Programs for those WCC students whose personal career goals can be met by less than an associate degree.

Each program of study is taught on a semester basis thus providing ease of transferability. Each of the faculty and staff of the Health Sciences Division hold degrees and credentials appropriate to their curricular area. All are highly motivated, well respected, and have acquired expertise in their field of study.

Industrial & Engineering Technologies Division

The WCC Industrial and Engineering Technologies Division offers a multitude of varied programs designed to prepare individuals to competently design, construct, service, maintain, repair, or install equipment for a wide range of industries.

Programmatic instruction includes both the theory and the skills training needed for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing industrial/commercial equipment, vehicle systems, communications systems, and physical facilities.

Practical application will be consistently emphasized. Additional advanced course work may be offered. Upon completion of any of these programs, graduates should have the necessary skills and related technical knowledge to qualify for employment or advancement in the various fields of industrial technology.
